Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector
Celebrate World Space Week at the CheckOut with this original ACM production: an evening of string quartets and solo works that take their inspiration from the heavens.
The program features Garth Knox’s Satellites, a dazzling exploration of orbit, light, and motion written for the Kronos Quartet’s 50 for the Future project; Allistair Coleman’s Moonshot, a three-part reflection on the Apollo 11 mission inspired by On Kawara’s Moon Landing triptych; and Terry Riley’s Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector, a hypnotic, modular quartet by one of the founders of Minimalism.
We’ll also showcase two solo cello works commissioned in collaboration with the SETI Institute by acclaimed Mexican composer Felipe Pérez Santiago, who will be present. These pieces combine virtuosic writing with interactive video, merging sound and image to capture our ongoing fascination with the search for extraterrestrial life.
And we’ll have space-themed, mezcal flavored slushies!
